Firefox's evolution

Postby Mr David » Tue May 27, 2008 8:58 pm

Stumbled over an interesting article the other night thanks to an off beat search. It's an interview with a fellow called Asa Dotzler who has been a non-technical member of the Mozilla community since 1998.

It tells the story of Mozilla emerging from the ashes of Netscape, how Mozilla bloat begat Firefox and how decisions were made on what to include or junk in the not so democratic development of Firefox.

Oh yeah, the pending release of FF3 is going to be a big step in this evolution. The final release of FF3 is slated for 17 June 2008 - that's next week!

Getting curious? Check out this video for a quick overview of some important new features in FF3. It'll help you get a handle on the new Awesome Bar and lots of other new stuff. And you'll get to meet a nice guy called Larry:

Roll up, roll up! Launch day for FF3 has arrived and Mozilla is doing its best to give the occasion a blaring fanfare.

How about helping out with the effort to create a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in a day? You've got until 0300 Melbourne time tonight to make your download count.

If that's too silly to bear thinking about then be thankful for the raft of wonderful support articles that's come on stream over the last couple of days. This Field Guide to FF3 provides a comprehensive run through of new features in FF3 complete with links to the wit and wisdom of leading developers responsible for each of them. (Quality reading elsewhere on this blog site too.) The run down on Firefox features linked from the FF3 download page is also worth a look.

Not to be missed, though, is this collection of Tips & Tricks for the new browser. It's a great update even for old Firefox dogs.

Thanks to Mr David for some very useful and informative links. I'd echo his sentiments about even old Firefox Dogs learning new tricks. FF3 is a very impressive development. Highly recommended.

I installed FireFox 3 and I just have to mention one of the things I was really impressed with; when I closed FireFox (2) before installing FF 3 I had about 10 tabs open, mostly pages that I wanted to read but hadn't yet because they had a large amount of information on them. I assumed I'd lose all trace of them once I opened up my upgraded FireFox but every one of them was still there. That's a nice touch :)

Plus it's faster :)
Also, although it's not new it's new for me, I'm really enjoying the piclens add-on for firefox.
