Cut Off

Readers of this blog are knowledgeable community. Remember, I was looking at the sky one day and noticed skywriting but could not make out the intent? I was surprised to see quick and well informed response. How about this one - looking up in Melbourne City, we're seeing lots of stars
From Spring in Melbourne

and Cut-Offs. I get the stars, but what are the Cut-Offs?

What purpose do they serve, pray tell....

Cut off is where the electricity supply ends and a new one begins. You can't have a single supply for all of the trams, you have to do it in sections.

Thanks Paul. eph came by and gave me a similar answer - the blog response mechanism was not working for him -

A cut-off is where the electricity in the tram wire cuts off. The tram wiring is divided into sections which are each insulated from the other. This allows maintenance work to be done on one section without affecting the others.

A cut-off sign is placed before, and to warn of, a section insulator.
You can see a section insulator in the picture.

It's so much fun to be in a social network of such knowledge.
