The Hindenbook Report Update
With the Dell/Sony battery recall well under way and now achieving 'The Hindenbook' moniker, Qantas have issued a warning that states -
"could only use them on battery power or through the aircraft power supply available in some first and business class cabins once they have first removed the batteries from the unit."
I sincerely hope Qantas update this to state what Dell themselves are reporting on safe usage.
Batteries subject to recall should not be used while awaiting a replacement battery pack from Dell. You may continue to use your notebook computer using the AC adapter power cord originally provided with your notebook.

The article says they've come up with these guidlines in consultation with Dell. I would say from the sounds of it that the problem with the batteries has to do with the circuitry that cuts off AC power when the batteries are fully charged. It is a known disadvantage of LiIon batteries that they are potentially explosive if subject to overcharging. So, I would say that they are only dangerous when plugged in to AC power. Therefore, Qantas say you're welcome to use the laptops on battery as long as you don't have them plugged in as well. Fair enough.
I am flying to Shanghai tomorrow on Qantas with my Dell (which isn't part of the recall). I hope they'll let me use it on the plane.

With today's iBook & Powerbook Battery recall announcement, it looks like they can add my Powerbook to the list of banned laptops on Qantas flights.
@Phil - Now this is a strange coincidence. I'm flying out of Shanghai to Sydney with Qantas on the 26th. Eerie.
