The BitTorrent blitz - and a Bleeding Edge plug

Phew! By coincidence (seeing that I never see what Garry Barker is writing about) both Bleeding Edge and Mac Man hit Green Guide readers with a double whammy on BitTorrent this morning. MacMan focuses on the decision by Warner Bros to use the peer-to-peer file-sharing technology as a legal distribution method. Bleeding Edge reports on what we consider to be the best BitTorrent client [no Mac version unfortunately], resources that will help you with things like port forwarding (a critical topic for anyone who wants to maximise speeds) and a Torrent site that gives you the best of British TV long before it's released locally (and in many cases they're not released locally). It also gives you a lot of great British shows from the past. You can read about it in today's Green Guide.

There's a bonus for our email subscribers, because we couldn't fit all our research into the story. Subscribers will get details of other Torrent sites that also weren't mentioned by Mac Man. They'll take a lot of the work out of finding new torrents. And there's some other links that will help you understand BitTorrent terms like "seeds" and "re-seeds", and walk you through a lot of the complexities.

So, if you've been thinking about supporting Bleeding Edge, but somehow just haven't got around to it, a $25 minimum subscription buys you an awful lot of free entertainment today, and heaps of money-saving tips all year.

I can't find the bleeding edge articles online anywhere
The edge articles on the age web site stop in feb 2006
where are they?
I am a subscriber to the age but I sometimes look up articles online at work

As far as I know articles from the Green Guide are not available on line.

Correct, the on-line version does not exist anymore, Charles has removed The Age's right to use it. If you want an electronic version you have to subscribe to Bleeding Edge as well - I do.

p.s. Nice to see the copy in the GG converted ยต to u.

cheers, Paul

Gotta love this bit torrent thingy.

Followed all the instructions of Bleeding Edge. Downloaded client. Looked for torrents at uknova. Said bewdy and rubbed hands in anticipation. Now we can catch up on the Six Feet Under episodes we missed.

Hmmm. Three days and still downloading 4.4gig of files. The torrent thing has been running non stop, sometimes reaching the breakneck download speed of 30kBs per sec on cable. Started downloading Thursday arvo. It is now Sunday a.m. and still 10 hours to go.

Somehow I don't think that Eddie is losing any sleep over the competition from torrents. And is BE telling us the whole truth when he says he gets up to 600kBs per sec? apal

That's why I included all those links. It requires quite a bit of tinkering to get good download speeds. You've got to set up port forwarding. You have to establishing your real upload and download speeds, work out percentages, and change the defaults in UTorrent's Network Preferences. Have a look here, and follow the instructions in the links.

As a subscriber, I received 4 extra links. The first two are great, but the last 2 have me scratching my head. Number 3 of the 4 doesn't appear to have anything to do with torrents, and number 4 appears to be a non-existent (or lapsed) domain.

Anyone know what to do with links 3 and 4?

Sorry. That was a stuff-up due no doubt to the distractions of preparing for the move away from SmartyHost. Just ignore the last two. Sorry for the bewilderment.

I was all enthused about downloading the Rose and Maloney episode I missed but when I finally managed to enrol in UKnova there was only series 2.
Any comments?

You can always request a re-seed in UKNova's forum area.
