Top restaurants

We're writing our annual list of capital city restaurants worth eating at for the Financial Review's annual diary. Any suggestions for Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra?

Almost everything at Ezard. Fake Snickers bar at Circa. Kingfish starter at Taxi. Best Japanese at Jamon ( Or Yu-u in Flinders lane, on a good day). Di Stasio for perfect Italian.
Tetsuya can't be topped for perfection with, of course, attnetion to detail and service. And the Gold Coast now has a couple of decent restaurants - Vanitas and Fellini. For Christs sake don't fall into that Vue du Monde/Flowerdrum/Neil Perry trap.

Marque, Surry Hills, Sydney: One of Sydney's finest modern French restaurants for outstandingly good food, where the elegant but understated decor shows the focus on taste. Expensive, but you can hardly go wrong with the degustation menu

Oscillate Wildly, Newtown, Sydney: Modern Australian restaurant in quirky Newtown cottage. Great food, good atmosphere and affordable.

Finally, a topic I'm qualified to comment on! Sydney's Marque in Surry Hills is one of the City's best, if not THE best. Ocean Room at Circular Quay has also impressed. Got excited at the prospect of dinner at ARIA a few weeks back, but it failed to stir my taste buds.

You should check out "Atlas Bondi" on Bondi Road. Sure, the head chef is my brother - but the food is excellent, and the atmosphere wonderful.

Cheers,
Kolya

Branching out, CW?

None better than the Flower Drum. Make sure there is plenty in the available credit column of the magic card though. The Stokehouse, either up or downstairs, is also very good.

Hmmm...

Canberra? A 'Top 10' for starters:

Courgette (Civic), Aubergine (Griffith), Chairman & Yip (Civic), Anise (Civic), Artespresso (Kingston), The Ginger Room (Parkes), Mezzalira (Civic), Rubicon (Griffith), Watermark (Parkes), Ottoman (Barton)

In Melbourne, I highly recommend Asiana in Port Melbourne. It's a wonderful restaraunt, with (as a bonus) an amazing wine list!

Hi Charles

Just a couple the first is the "Lobster Cave" in Beaumaris Vic, unbelievable food! and the service is really good, the matre de is quite a smooth character! The Second is the "Nautilus" in Lakes Entrance, a floating Seafood restaurant which tends to win a lot of awards.

Enjoy a fine Italian lunch hobnobbing with the pollies at Machiavelli in the city or hop on the flying boat to Church Point for a romantic meal (with your wife, not your secretary!) on Pittwater. If you drive there you can rent a chalet and make it an overnighter.

Sirens, Hobart. Organic Vegetarian fine dining like I've never seen anywhere else, lovely atmosphere, excellent Tassie wines.

Florentines in Church St, Brighton - just 'cause the coffee is so good.

p.s. Nice to see you have wide readership - or widely travelled.

cheers, Paul

Wow I must be only Perth person here!

The Boatshed on the South Perth foreshore was good last time I ate there, but it was a few years ago. Great views of the city should make it worthwhile though.

Sienna's and Kailis Fish Cafe in Leederville are good spots, there's a couple of nice clubs there too namely the Niche Bar.

I've heard Benny's and The Red Herring are the best in Freo. Oyster Bar on the Beach is a great spot for a sundowner and a feed too.

Also worth a mention is Alfred's Kitchen, it's an old fashioned burger joint in Guildford that's been there longer than I've been alive. Great spot late at night to sit around the fire and chew the fat with the local coppers and even the odd crim at the same time.
