The A+ list of Aussie bloggers

We the journalists blogging at the KickStart IT media conference - well, basically, Mark Jones from the AFR, Phil Sim and yours truly - have formed an A+ list of Australian bloggers, as a spontaneous response to Frank Arrigo's call for a meeting of A list Australian bloggers - who can't, according to Frank, be journalists who blog.

The fact that Frank - a nice enough chap - is "an Aussie Microsoft blogger" no doubt gives him sufficient stature to make these judgments. We suggest, however, that he's contaminated by being on the Microsoft payroll, and if any category should be excluded from an alphabetically ordered list of bloggers, it's vendor bloggers.

Aside from [naturally], the above three blogs, our A+ list (soon to be extended) currently includes:

Cameron Reilly, alas, doesn't get the joke. And he's turned a joke by Phil about spamming tech.meme into a fantastic conspiracy theory against... who else? ... journalists who blog.

There's an old saying about keeping your friends close, and your enemies even closer. In the interests of journalistic integrity, I believe that you should allow Microsodt Frank to be part of your list.

They way he cannot become a martyr for his opinion : "oh look, those sooks at bleeding edge don't like me" and you can print a disclaimer that the opinions of your bloggers may not necessarily represent those of the owners of the board.

Is that A as in assXXXX - but really if journalists can't be A list bloggers what happens to Dan Gillmor, Doc Searles, etc and if were a journalist and now do something else (say PR, but I've never been a journalist) are you excluded by Frank? PS I think Cam has been spending too much time with Noam Chomsky to tell the diff between a joke and a conspiracy sorry Cam :)

Not a bad A-list Charlie. Some good quality blogs there. That you're all mates and work in the same industry only plays a minor role I suppose... Serioulsy, what makes you think BleedingEdge will qualify??? Actually, what makes you think anyone outside the technology journalism circle would even care about what you think about blogs? After all, you only blog for profit - folding Razor should be enough proof of that.

I got the joke Charles. You just out-gamed. Beware the blogger.

Damn. I think I just deleted a comment by mistake. It was one of those nasty ones, anonymous of course, so maybe it was a Freudian slip.

Something about the singular arrogance of a low-life like Bleeding Edge nominating himself for any A list, given one's intrinsic lack of worth as a human being and particularly the fact that BE clearly only blogs for money, what with that decision to pop Razor back in its sheath.

We wouldn't want to deprive this person of a chance to air his stunning skill as a character analyst and moral arbiter.

So maybe we should have an A list of bloggers who aren't tarnished by Samuel Johnson's dictum [updated for the modern form]: No man but a fool blogs but for money.

Over at Unfiltered, another commenter claims journos have to be classified as vendors, given they're selling something. So should that be an A list of unpaid, unemployed bloggers?

Why no link for Paul? Its Http://tinfinger.blogspot.com.

Also, no offense to Rich, but does he have enough content to be an A list blogger? I think he has the ability if he blogged more.

Also, is it purely personal that you don't include Cam in the A-list?

Cam (if you read this), I hope you nailed down CW and did a podcast. It must be about due for the second annual Charles Wright edition of G'Day world!

Molly
PS. I am waiting for the C-list to open so I can apply for that!

You must be talking about an A list of technology bloggers or bloggers that blog about blogging. What is the criteria for A list? In the US it seems to be Technorati links: In order for the above list I counted 19, 1, 7, 176, 2,736, 147, 9, 103. What about the non-tech types: Tim Blair (992), The Spin Starts Here 216, John Quiggin (no. 7,773, 565 links from 180 sites), Grab your Fork (no. 12,199, 313 links 125 sites ... We need Ben Barren to hurry up with his local version. From Blog no. 28,521 (175 links from 68 sites)

What I like the best about this is that Australian Bloggers are starting to talk to each other.

Ben is doing 'gnoos' to help Australian bloggers have a conversation and to be seen here down under and most importantly be found.

I have been reading Frank for years and then Charles, Ben, Phil, Darren and Mike are in the order I have taken up reading their blogs and only just now I have dropped Richard, Shane, Trevor and Brad into my RSS reader.

It would seem that the KickStart IT media conference has done exactly what the title calls for. A 'kickstart', I have found it odd that these guys had not been talking before this.

And now we have Alex Barnett talking about Aussie TalkTechBlogs, a project of Frank's.

This is all good for the Australian blogosphere.

I'll humbly put myself up for a 'C' list blogger, too.

In case you're not reading other comment threads, I'll repeat here my response to a post from Steven:

"The A+ list is, of course, group satire. Neither I nor Mark is seriously suggesting that either of us belongs on anyone's A + list. We're poking fun at the whole idea of A lists, particularly when they exclude an entire category - journalists who blog, or vendors who blog or whatever.

"Why bother with someone else's A list? Compile your own. My personal favourites don't necessarily include any of those I posted in that story - although I do check them all out from time to time."

The comments here are great!

Open conversations are exactly what the Blogosphere is about.

Great to see links to other great Australian Bloggers too.

Interesting the assumption you have to be a techie or ITJ to make the A-List (or even the Z-List?). It's a big world...

Posted by: JoshGlid at March 1, 2006 01:42 PM

Wow. I'm honoured to be on any list ;)

But gee, Molly loves getting a dig in doesn't he. He obviously hasn't seen all 9 of my blogs that I've had in the last 4 years ;)

Check Clique Communications for my recent activity.

Hey Rich,
You know I love you man. I didn't realise about all the blogs. Can you list them somewhere? Also I took this off the fact that the Richard Giles blog isn't that active and thats the one the Bleeder link too! Perhaps you could ask him to link to your new one (especially as it has commerial ramifications).

Might I suggest you publish your A-list (updated regularly, of course) as an OPML reading list so that people can subscribe to your recommendations, and stay subscribed to them as your recommendations change in aggregators (like BlogBridge) that support it.
