Sorry. Gotta go!
Just got off the phone with one of those telemarketers who wanted to sell us [can you believe this?] ... compost!
We've just bookmarked sorrygottago.com, which allows you to download some mini soundtracks - ringing phones, street noise, kids playing, a helicopter etc - and play them back when someone is determined to sell you [dammit!] compost, or something else, or just will not take a hint. It's a vital form of self-defence for the connected world.

Why not just hang up? It works every time.
"I'm doing a survey", "I don’t want to sell you anything" (inevitably an invite to a free seminar, where they WILL try to sell you something), and a pre-recorded voice asking me to "hold while you are connected" are my triggers to just hang up.

I agree with Wilbert "just hang up" thats what I do.
You can also register with "Australian Direct Marketing Association" (ADMA) for their "Do not contact service"
http://www.adma.com.au/asp/index.asp?pgid=1999
This has not stopped all marketing phone calls but it has reduced the number that I receive.

Yes I registered with the ADMA. I really can't tell if it has had any affect or not. We still get annoyed by telemarketers every now and then... I'm just not sure whether it's less often or the same as before.
Anyway yeah, I'd just say 'not interested thankyou. I'm hanging up now, bye' and leave it at that.
Or else be rude and put the phone down on the counter and leave them to hang up on you? That's kinda fun too...
