The PC in the surgery

Does your doctor let you see his computer screen? Too many of them use them as "a shield", according to a US study. If your GP huddles behind his screen, you might look for someone a little more communicative.

Don't have to go as far as US. About 10 years ago, I went to a 24x7 day Medical Centre - the attending physician was sitting at an amber(?) terminal - probably some Pick system. He sat behing the terminal looked at me from a distance of 1 metre and dispensed his wisdom. No laying on of hands. It's not the technology, it's people.

Another thing to look for is how many freebies on the desk there is from drug companies ie pens, pads, coasters etc. If there is far too many, find another doctor who will tend to your needs and not the needs of some drug company.

Just to speak in favour of the medical profession (I have a daughter training to be a doctor), I'm glad to say that at the clinic we have been going to for about 15 years, the doctors sit with the computer to the side. Depending on which room we're in we can sometimes see the screen sometimes not, but we don't have any bariers between doctor and patient.
