Google gives you the Earth

Anyone played with Google Earth yet? It's a free 3D satellite mapping application that is "part flight simulator, part video game and part world atlas". It allows you to fly around the planet to locations you specify. You can ask directions, and zoom in from space to street level.

It works only with Windows desktop machines built in the past four years (two years for laptops). Google is still working on a version for the Mac.

Pay $US20 extra, and you get a version that has GPS device support, the ability to import spreadsheets, drawing tools and better printing. And there's a version for professionals. Or enthusiasts willing to spend $US400.

I did... didn't allow me to drill down to Melbourne, etc. or any other... just had some detail for the US... and little else. Just a silly little thing to please people.

A real GPS is more expensive though (getting cheaper by the day).

Wow, I thought it was great. I could see Melbourne Central in Elizabeth Street, the great pyramids, Parliament House in Canberra, The London Eye and more.

Its not perfect but it is amazing!

I had a look at the website with the hope it would deliver better imagery than the recent bleedingedge article for worldwind, but alais the downlaod page is temporarily unavailable for further development, afterall it is a beta program. I wait anxiously to receive a copy.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone has come across similar applications to both of these?
