Football loyalty

OK, Bleeding Edge has been a loyal Bomber fan since we first moved to Melbourne, rented a house in Aberfeldie St, Essendon, and spent an awful lot of Saturdays at Windy Hill. We've had a lot of ups and downs since then, and now that we've settled in at St Kilda, maybe we could justify switching sides.

But football loyalty dies hard ... particularly, it appears, when you're an Essendon supporter. According to a Sensis survey, in Victoria at least, Essendon supporters outnumber those of any other team. And where the supporters of other teams lose interest when they're not winning, Essendon supporters retain their passion. What's wrong with us? Are we just thick?

Maybe we could take a pill.

Well there you go! chriscurnow.com is also a lifelong bomber fan. It goes back a long way. My elder brother (ten years older than me) lived the first two years of his life in Essendon and I guess I just caught the disease.

I was cured for a few years until Sheedy came along and we won 18 (or was that 19) games in a row in 1981.

I've never been a member and never been to Windy Hill (shame on me) but this year with the side not doing so well I have been tempted to take out membership.

Go Bombers!!!

When I was still very little I asked, "who do I barrack for". The reply was unequivocal - "This family barracks for the Bombers".

I started making the trek from the Eastern Suburbs to Windy Hill with my uncle in the 1970's, tough times for Essendon. Often we would meet up with an aunt and my cousins who still lived in Essendon. She would usually bring a big thermos and fruit cake.

My uncle had been going nearly every week since the 1950s and he imparted a quiet philosophy of watching and appreciating the game. "Haven't got the cattle yet", "He could be a player", of Shane Heard, "That's an impressive kid" of Tim Watson, "what a heart" of Ronnie Andrews. Along with "if you don't get in front you don't get the frees" to my whinging about umpire decisions.

Then we've been blessed with the ride with Sheedy, perhaps the fact we've seen him take three premiership generations through means we find it easier to have faith through a lean time. Sheedy is not just a coach whose record rests on getting the best out of star players.

However, as I contemplate my poor performance in the tipping competition I realise that I am not that much of football expert, just an expert on Essendon.

Oh god, tflip, does this mean that you are only a mere mortal(gasp)

Sadly tis all too true Jamrob.

Indeed as any junior member of my circle would attest I am complete failure at Mortal Kombat as well.

However if I could aspire to powers and abilities far beyond etc... it would be those of the good Doctor. And of course who wouldn't trade any technical gizmo they currently have for a Tardis? Though no doubt a small minority would insist on an iTardis.
