How to solve Sudoku puzzles

By now, no doubt, you're tearing your hair out over those new Sudoku puzzles that The Age has inflicted on you (and which we occasionally mis-spell as Sudoko). Bleeding Edge has been scouring the Web, looking for help. Here's some great clues for solving Sudoku. Here's some more Sudoku secrets.

There's a Sudoko helper, and Sudoku addicts have banded together for self help. You can learn advanced Sudoku tactics, or perhaps use a Sudoku spreadsheet. Alternatively, you could ignore them and stick to cryptic crosswords.

Words are much more interesting than numbers I think, although I must confess to doing Albert Haddad's Attemptations on the odd occasion, of course they also have interesting little stories attached to them. Always liked essay writing much more than doing maths in those far off school days!

I am excited about Sudoku but I dont dare to start before I catch up on all the jobs I should have done by now - and maybe my next tax return and next year's Christmas cards - I know it will take me over.

I guess the first thing I will do is to design a template of very large 9 x 9 squares so that every square is big enough to take all nine numbers - then circle the given numbers and start eliminating the rest - in soft pencil 5B grade.

Of course, I could instal one huge whiteboard on one of my walls and get some exercise stretching up, down and sideways!

A colleague spent four hours on a puzzle on Monday night, so first thing I did was limit myself to doing them on the tram, or to about 70 min/day, otherwise it would become an addiction.

Well done, Wilbert. Only 70 minutes a day seems perfectly reasonable to us. Who could call THAT addictive behaviour!

"the first thing I will do is to design a template of very large 9 x 9 squares so that every square is big enough to take all nine numbers"

I started doing this, but then realised that it is much better to learn to do as much of the puzzle as possible in your head. Also is is advisable to USE A PENCIL.

let the computer do the dirty work (and forget about the pencil...)

Or use Bleeding Edge's own Sudoku helper! It's there on the main menu.

You could always try using Sudoku helper widget found on http://www.sudohelper.com/widget

(Sudoku might become too easy though..., try playing the difficult ones)

I have been looking everywhere for help with this addiction. I have looked for a 12 step program but can only find a 9 step one.
