Long theses in Word
God knows there’s not likely to be any PhD students reading THIS blog, what with us having the attention span of a distracted ant, and a taste for the – how shall we put this so as not to lose too much face? – umm, off-beat.
But just in case (a) you’ve stumbled across this site while searching for something vastly more important and (b) are formatting a long thesis, the Macquarie University Library has a PDF file on using Word for that very purpose. We can’t say whether it works or not, because we tend to be incapable of writing anything longer than 1000 words. Although it’s amazing what we can stretch to, if they’re paying by the word.

Been there done that! (PhD with Word) The article is fairly simplistic and does not cover problem areas such as trying to keep all footnotes on the right page and not splitting tables between pages. Styles, which are critical to prevent last minute formatting headaches, are glossed over. I was advised to leave Master documents alone. My 450 page thesis was left in separate chapter files, the page numbers were made to follow on and printed chapter by chapter. However, the printer who laser printed my examination copies used two versions of Word and they were not totally compatible. Subsequently it had to be reprinted and I bought my own laser fo the library copies etc.
