Big Pond ... bringing up the rear

Read this and weep. The Guardian welcomes the widespread introduction of real broadband services by British Telecom at prices that ought to make Telstra Big Pond executives hang their heads in shame - had the capacity for shame not been firmly rooted out in the staff selection and training processes.

It then compares the British experience with France, where in major urban centres, "it is not difficult to get an 8Mbps connection, combined with free local and national telephone calls, and access to TV channels delivered through DSL, for €30 - $A35 $A50- a month".

I agree that we're paying through the nose for broadband, but not quite this much - a Euro is worth about AA$1.68 at last count, so 30 of them would make AU$50.40, not $35. Unless the "A" stands for "American", but even then the conversion is a bit short - should be around $39. Still a good deal, though, for all that.

$50.22, in fact. Not sure what happened there. I did the calculations at xe.com, which is a great resource, and I could have sworn I'd selected AUD ... but clearly not. Anyway, as you say, it's still a good deal. Compared with our prices, it's a great deal!
